Beaches and waves

Go along the coast. Watching the swell coming in. Feeling the east wind blowing. And thinking that it would be good to get in the water. Have a session or simply start surfing or boogieing. It couldn’t be better. Nicaragua is a surfing Eldorado!!!

Contrary to Costa Rica, Nicaragua is a surf-destination still not very famous. Only the addicts and the hunters of “escondidos spots” know the secret. Beginners or experienced, there are spots for all levels. It is impossible to find yourself in the middle of a crowd of surfers on the line-up. Exploring the more secluded beaches will ensure that you can surf alone in great conditions.

Popoyo, the Nicaraguan surf temple

Popoyo is a legend, a reef-break, a wave that breaks on a slab, it is a kind of break of the element on a reef.a regular and constant wave, inevitably a little crowded during the tourist season (around Christmas). Avoid surfing at low tide of course.

Are you a beginner? Popoyo offers you an alternative, the beginners’ bay in English, you will find it easily. The famous Mag Rock and the restaurant bearing its name, Magnific Rock, overlook it. Get in the water with your family early in the morning!

Of course the area is a little less tranquil in terms of accessibility. A small multi-wheel drive vehicle can help, as you can imagine. For all seasons it is useful though in Nicaragua and in the secret and sacred paths of Popoyo. The wave of Popoyo, like many of the spots in the country, “works” all year round! There are of course also seasons and temporada de olas, I will come back to this below.

A little further out in the ocean is the Outer Reef, a wave that is a bit violent, some say “the most brutal in Nicaragua”. Locals only and very good levels only allowed on this lip that can kiss you dangerously especially when it wakes up. It can be up to 20 feet high, about 6 meters. Spectacle guaranteed. Take a look at the video at the end of the article.

Prepare your surf-trip:

When is it open?  All year round except for the month of October. There are more than 330 days of off-shore wind, thanks to the presence of lakes located inland. From January to March is the season of small waves with an offshore wind that can be strong. In April-May, it’s now! And yes, the southern swells are arriving right now, the water is a bit cooler (let’s not be picky). The world health situation is not favourable for a return trip to Nicaragua right now, but plan your next surf-trip!
As far as the climate is concerned, it is not an exaggeration to say that the weather is always nice and sunny. No matter the period, you’ll get nice waves and sunburns.
